Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) was a Mexican artist, born in Coyoacán in Mexico City. She is best known for her self-portraits, in which she depicted themes of identity, pain, nature and the human experience. Her art is characterised by bold colours, detailed symbols and a blend of Mexican folk art, religious motifs and elements of surrealism – although Kahlo herself rejected the surrealist label. Her sources of inspiration included Mexican culture and folklore, nature, personal experiences and the country's history and traditions. Today, Frida Kahlo is among the world's most recognised artists, and her works continue to be a major source of inspiration in both art and design.
Self Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird is one of Kahlo's most celebrated works — a richly symbolic composition that draws on Mexican folk art, surrealism and deeply personal autobiography.
